Manjit's Story

"I was made redundant in April 2009 and after a few months being unemployed I decided to volunteer some of my free time to a worthwhile cause.

I was signposted to Citizens Advice and after an interview I was delighted to be told I could start with the CAB in September 2009 as a Generalist Adviser.

I then started a training programme that was excellent in preparing you to deal with most matters that a citizen may present to you.

I had enjoyed every minute of trainig and the people I worked with, and then in early 2010 I started advising. Although advising was sometimes very daunting, there has was always lots of support from supervisors and colleagues and I soon felt very confident in my role and this became very rewarding when you felt that you had helped someone overcome a particular difficulty.

In August 2010 an opportunity arose to apply for a a position within the bureau as a paid Gateway Assessor. I applied and was fortunate in being offered the post.

Working in the bureau has truly been rewarding both as a volunteer and as a paid staff member and I would recommend it to anyone."
