Coventry Citizens Advice Bureau is always looking for new volunteers for a variety of roles; we have volunteers who are generalist advisers, who work as information assistants and reception assistants and others who help with administration tasks. The descriptions below set out what is involved in each role.
Generalist Advisers
Advisers see clients with problems across a wide range of enquiry areas including debt and benefits, employment, housing, family and personal matters and consumer problems. The training initially takes about 3 months before volunteers are ready to advise independently and up to a year is needed in order to obtain the full Certificate in Generalist Advice. Coventry CAB asks for a commitment of 12 hours per week for this role, spaced over 2 days.
Information Assistants
These volunteers help clients to access information for themselves via the internet, using Adviceguide – the CAB information service for public use. We also keep a large stock of leaflets and can signpost clients on to other organisations. Information assistants commit to one day per week from 9.30 to 2.30 and training takes place over 5 sessions.
Reception Assistants
Volunteers help staff reception to greet and inform clients of our services and to manage the queuing system. Reception assistants also input client data for record keeping. They offer one day per week and training takes place initially during one session with further training whilst on the job.
Admin Volunteers
This group is involved in a variety of administration tasks including photocopying, typing and filing. Training is given for specific tasks and there is no set pattern of hours.
Social Policy Assistants
Our Social Policy volunteers work with our Social Policy team help improve the policies and practices that affect people's lives. Tasks can include creating promotional material, preparing reports and statistics or relaying information.
